About Gary's Fairy Economics

Gary Stevenson has become one of Britain's best-known economic commentators. His message is powerful, simple and extremely shareable: the rich are getting richer, ordinary people are getting poorer, and taxing wealth is the way out.

Some of that diagnosis deserves to be taken seriously.

But large audiences and confident delivery do not make every claim correct. Gary's accounts of his trading career, his memoir, Britain's finances and the likely effects of a wealth tax have all attracted questions, criticism and — in some cases — open disagreement from former colleagues and other economists.

This website exists to collect those questions in one place.

It is critical, occasionally rude and deliberately satirical. It is not intended to suggest that every disputed claim is a deliberate lie. There is a difference between being wrong, exaggerating, simplifying for an audience and knowingly deceiving people. Where the available evidence does not settle that distinction, we will say so.
